Mechanical Fitter
Skilled mechanical fitter role with an attractive salary, shift work, hands-on maintenance duties and stable long-term prospects in manufacturing.
The role of Mechanical Fitter – Cable & Electrical Lead Manufacturing is an exciting, hands-on artisan position for qualified fitters. The position offers a salary of R25 000 to R30 000, which is negotiable based on experience. Needing an N3 Mechanical Engineering qualification and a recognised Trade Test, it is a permanent appointment with shift work, overtime, and standby options.
Applicants are expected to bring at least three years’ experience in manufacturing, ideally with cable, wiring harness or high-volume production machinery. A successful candidate will perform both planned and unplanned maintenance. You will attend to mechanical breakdowns, diagnose faults, and carry out repairs on essential production equipment. Workshop duties also include maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems and supporting improvements in machine reliability.
This position is not only about technical skills. Excellent communication and teamwork are also valued. The company expects candidates to collaborate closely with production staff, align and calibrate mechanical tooling, and ensure efficient production changeovers. Accurate record keeping and a commitment to safety guidelines are non-negotiable, especially adherence to OHSA and proper PPE usage.
Responsibilities and Daily Role
Your daily routine revolves around minimising downtime and keeping the factory running efficiently. Attending to machinery breakdowns quickly is crucial. You’ll take responsibility for repairs, adjustments and proactive maintenance work.
From inspecting components and replacing parts to calibrating and setting up production tools, your technical knowledge will be tested daily. Working with advanced cable-making equipment means keeping up with modern lean production practices. Supporting production teams to ensure top-quality output is a key feature of the work environment.
In addition, being able to interpret and work from engineering drawings is expected. Maintaining accurate maintenance documentation ensures the reliability of machinery is traceable. Candidates should thrive in dynamic, sometimes high-pressure, surroundings.
What’s Good About This Job

Being part of a growing team allows for varied learning opportunities. The company culture encourages reliability and initiative, so committed employees are rewarded with financial and career advancement over time.
Considerations and Possible Drawbacks
Much of the downside comes from the realities of shift work, overtime and on-call responsibilities. The role can involve physically demanding labour, with the need to troubleshoot equipment at all hours.
